Suspect
in
Musharraf
assassination
bid
escapes
[World
News]:
New
York,
Jan
10
:
An
alleged
mastermind
behind
the
plot
to
assassinate
Pakistan
President
Pervez
Musharraf
has
escaped
from
police
custody
in
Karachi
and
security
agencies
have
launched
a
nationwide
manhunt
to
nab
him,
a
report
said
here.
The
suspect
identified
as
Mushtaq
Ahmad,
a
possible
alias,
gave
the
security
agencies
a
slip
around
New
Year's
Day
in
what
is
being
termed
as
a
security
lapse,
the
report
said
quoting
unidentified
sources.
Security
authorities
have
circulated
his
three
photographs
with
one
showing
him
in
a
beard,
another
with
a
moustache
and
third
a
clean
shaven
one,
Time
magazine
reported.
The
photographs
were
sent
to
air
and
sea
ports
and
land
borders
even
though
they
believe
that
he
would
probably
try
to
slip
across
borders
into
Afghanistan,
it
said.
The
disappearance,
according
to
the
report,
has
clearly
rattled
Pakistan's
nervous
security
establishment,
underscoring
the
continuing
threat
to
Musharraf,
who
has
survived
at
least
three
attempts
on
his
life.
A
Pakistani
military
court
last
month
sentenced
a
soldier
to
death
for
his
involvement
in
the
December
14
plot,
and
the
administration
is
expected
to
investigate
whether
insiders
were
involved
in
Ahmad's
escape,
the
report
said.
On
December
14,
Musharraf
narrowly
escaped
an
assassination
bid
when
a
series
of
powerful
bombs
exploded
seconds
after
his
limousine
crossed
a
bridge
near
Islamabad.
