Bin Laden sends email attacking Saudi peace plan to London newspaper

A London-based Arabic newspaper says it has received an email it believes to be from Osama bin Laden.

The email to the Al-Quds Al-Arabi newspaper denounces Saudi Crown Prince Abdullah's Middle East peace plan and praises Palestinian suicide attacks.

The style and the language of the statement closely resembles those used in previous statements by bin Laden.

"Prince Abdullah bin Abdel-Aziz's initiative, a Zionist-American (initiative) in Saudi government clothes, is merely a trick and a conspiracy," says bin Laden in the email.

The Saudi initiative offers "normal relations" and security for Israel if it returns Arab lands it occupied in the 1967 Arab-Israeli war.

Bin Laden also praised Palestinian suicide attacks on Israelis and urged Muslims to launch jihad, or holy struggle, against the Jewish state.

Sixteen Israelis were killed and more than 100 injured Wednesday when a Palestinian Islamic militant burst into a hotel dining room at the coastal resort of Netanya and blew himself up in the latest of such suicide attacks.

"The Jews try in vain to flee, finding no refuge and becoming exposed to exploding bodies that make them taste death and chased by horror," says the e-mail.

He describes suicide bombings in Israel and the September 11 attacks as "the great events" and "the blessed jihad".

TV channel airs new bin Laden video

Al-Jazeera satellite TV channel has aired a new videotape showing Osama bin Laden.

Osama bin Laden's top deputy is shown claiming the September 11 attacks as a "great victory".

A man identified as Alghamdi and believed to be one of the suicide hijackers during the Septemeber 11 attrocity (AP)

Al-Jazeera has showed a series of clips from what appears to be new videotapes from the al-Qaida network. In one, bin Laden and his top deputy, Ayman al-Zawahri, kneel side-by-side.

Only al-Zawahri is shown speaking.

The latest pictures of Osama bin Laden (AP)

Al-Jazeera says it will air the complete tapes on Thursday.

An Al-Jazeera official says the tape was received a few days ago at its headquarters in Doha, Qatar. It is not clear when the tapes were made or how the station, known for airing bin Laden statements, received it.

Al-Jazeera also show a man identified as one of the September 11 hijackers speaking to the camera in a style similar to the video-tapes in which Palestinian suicide bombers deliver last testaments.

An Al-Jazeera subtitle identified the man only as Alghamdi. But the editor in chief of Al-Jazeera said the man in the video was Ahmed Ibrahim A Alhaznawi, a hijacker on board United Airlines Flight 93, which crashed in rural Pennsylvania.

"Those 19 brothers who went out and worked and sacrificed their lives for God, God granted this victory that we enjoy today," Zawahri said in the other tape.

"The great victory that was achieved was because of God's help and not because of our efficiency or cunning," Zawahri said.

Nuclear scientists set to work on 'bunker-buster' bomb

American nuclear scientists have reportedly been ordered to produce a "bunker-busting" bomb designed to destroy the deepest underground hiding places.

Work is to begin next month on a missile which would dig up to 300ft into the earth before unleashing its nuclear payload.

The missile is part of a renewed nuclear research programme ordered by George W Bush which aims to produce weapons which could be used against non-nuclear countries to destroy their caches of chemical or biological weapons.

Researchers will begin trying to assemble the 5,000lb bomb using existing warheads and upgraded conventional bunker-busting missiles, USA Today reported.

The bomb would be used against the kind of deep cave complexes targeted by conventional weapons at Tora Bora in Afghanistan and which American intelligence believes Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein has been building to protect himself and his weapons of mass destruction.

It would be launched, probably from an aircraft, before using its specially designed hard tip and its rocket propulsion to dig down through the earth for up to 300ft before exploding with the power equivalent to 2,000 tonnes of high explosive.

The depth would mean the atomic explosion and its fallout should be limited to below ground, but shock waves would cause massive damage on the surface of the earth above it.

President Bush does not back the comprehensive nuclear test ban treaty signed by his predecessor Bill Clinton, which has still to be ratified by the Senate.

Mr Bush has also appointed Stephen Younger, a scientist who advocates the use of "mini-nukes" on battlefields of the future, to the Pentagon office in charge of defending America from nuclear, chemical and biological attack.

Dr Younger was head of nuclear weapons research at Los Alamos, the secret facility which made the first atom bombs, when he wrote: "It is often, but not universally thought, that nuclear weapons would be used only when the nation is in the gravest danger. This may not be true in the future."

April memo warned of Boston airport terror threat

The former public safety director at Boston's Logan Airport wrote a detailed memo last April warning of possible terrorist attacks.

Joseph Lawless said authorities had uncovered suspected terrorists with links to the airport.

The existence of the memo, dated April 27, has not been previously disclosed. Ten hijackers boarded the two planes at Logan which crashed into New York's World Trade Centre towers.

Mr Lawless said: "I wrote it because I was concerned about strong Boston connections to some of these terrorist organisations and because we had vulnerabilities that had to be addressed immediately."

The Boston Globe says the Massachusetts Port Authority had incorporated Mr Lawless's agenda into a review of the airport's security measures which had not been completed by September 11.

The memo mentioned the failed plan to bomb LA International Airport during millennium celebrations as evidence of an increasing threat of terrorism.

In the wake of September 11, Mr Lawless was demoted and replaced as public safety director. He is now head of security at the Port of Boston.

A spokesman for acting Governor Jane Swift said he wasn't aware anyone in the governor's office knew about the memo.

US deploys hi-tech sensors against al-Qaida nuclear attack

American authorities have deployed hundreds of sophisticated sensors across the country in a bid to foil any attempted nuclear attacks by al-Qaida terrorists.

Geiger counters and new hi-tech equipment have been distributed to customs officers and border guards as well as the country's embassies and foreign military bases.

Elite commandoes from Delta Force have been put on standby to seize any nuclear material which finds its way into the country, the Washington Post reported.

The move was revealed after it emerged a report from an intelligence operative says a Russian 10-kiloton nuclear bomb had fallen into al-Qaida's hands and its operatives were planning to smuggle it into New York.

The report, in October, was found to be unsubstantiated but only a handful of people were told of it to prevent widespread panic, Time magazine reported.

Fears of an attack by a nuclear weapon bought from Russian forces or by a so-called "dirty" bomb have mounted despite a failure to find evidence Osama bin Laden's terror group obtained such devices.

A search of al-Qaida camps and building in Afghanistan has found only crudely marked canisters which led American investigators to believe the terrorists had been duped by smugglers into being sold harmless hospital waste, thinking it was highly radioactive.

But American security services are so concerned at the possibility of nuclear or radioactive attack they have deployed equipment - called gamma ray and neutron flux devices - only given before to members of elite Nuclear Emergency Search Teams (Nest).

The Nest groups are scientists who are normally on standby to check claims by extortionists who say they have nuclear material, but have been reassigned to giving back-up to Delta Force.

A senior government official told the Washington Post: "Clearly the sense of urgency has gone up. The more you gather information, the more our concerns increased about al Qaida's focus on weapons of mass destruction of all kinds."

Al-Qaida chief 'was in Manhattan on September 10'

Reports are claiming Al-Qaida chief Mohammed Atta - who led the terrorist attacks on the US - visited Manhattan on September 10.

The New York Daily News says the FBI have evidence of his credit card transactions in Manhattan for that date.

The paper claims officials believe he was there to check the co-ordinates of the World Trade Centre.

It says investigators believe he plugged the co-ordinates into a sophisticated Global Positioning System.

The Daily News says they believe the hijackers were too inexperienced to handle the planes without help.

The FBI's New York office has refused to comment on the reports.

The paper's source says the unusual flight paths of American Airlines Flight 11 and

United Airlines Flight 175 from Boston shows the hijackers used the devices to guide them.

With the coordinates entered, the devices would have told the hijackers when they

were off course.

The FBI believes Atta travelled to Boston on September 10 then drove to Portland, Maine.

On the morning of September 11, Atta and fellow hijacker Abdulaziz Alomari flew from Portland International Jetport to Boston's Logan Airport where they boarded American Airlines Flight 11.

Mushroom cloud after massive Afghan explosion

A huge explosion has hit close to the Taliban front line north of Kabul.

A mushroom cloud is said to have billowed at least 1,000 feet into the sky.

The origin of the explosion is not clear, since there were no aircraft immediately overhead.

However, US planes had roared in the skies over the front lines north of the capital.

It is also not clear what positions have been hit by the blast and how extensive the damage is.

US jets bombed near the fronts north of Kabul and the key northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif overnight. The cities of Jalalabad in the east and Kandahar in the south also came under attack, according to Taliban and other reports.

Russian border guards in Tajikistan also reported fighting close to the border, with opposition forces using a tank to shell Taliban outposts near the village of Zardkamar.

Meanwhile, Afghanistan's opposition has deployed hundreds of elite fighters near the front north of Kabul.

The appearance of some 800 to 1,000 elite troops near the front about 30 miles north of Kabul was the first tangible sign that the opposition was gearing up for a move on the capital, which the ruling Taliban seized in 1996.

Bin Laden's agents 'swindled in nuclear black market'

Osama bin Laden's bid to obtain nuclear weapons failed repeatedly as his operatives were duped by black-market swindlers, it has been claimed.

American officials who have been analysing suspected radioactive substances in Afghanistan have found nothing to prove bin Laden acquired components of a nuclear weapon.

They also believe his operatives were ripped off by smugglers who sold them crude fakes which they claimed were nuclear materials, the New York Times reported.

A search of more than 110 buildings and terrorist camps in Afghanistan has found nothing more than crude containers hand-painted with skulls and crossbones. Some had apparently been dipped in medical waste to fool a Geiger counter but were clearly not dangerous, the investigators found.

A Pentagon official told the newspaper: "We did not find any type of serious radiological material. The stuff we found in Afghanistan was not the real stuff. They were swindled, like a lot of other people."

The most suspicious items found in Afghanistan were canisters discovered at the Taliban's agriculture ministry in Kabul and an al Qaida training camp near Kandahar, which were sent to the United States for testing. But the canisters did not have standard international radiation warning signs which would have indicated they were stolen or purchased from a nuclear facility.

"One just had a skull and crossbones painted on it by hand," said an American official. "It was a very primitive container. The people carrying it would have been exposed to radiation."

The discovery that al-Qaida was swindled by fake nuclear smugglers confirmed Pentagon research which showed that little of the black market in radioactive material was genuine.

An internal report showed that of almost 1,000 cases of alleged nuclear trafficking tracked since 1991 most were fake. The report said: "Most cases involve at least some degree of swindling, but small amounts of various genuine nuclear materials have been intercepted, including plutonium."

"All you need is a small amount of radioactive medical waste," an official said. "Pass a Geiger counter over it and you get a positive reading. You can sell it to an uneducated person as radiological."

'More al-Qaida attacks almost a certainty'

The chance of more al Qaida attacks against US targets is "almost a certainty", claims American Vice President Dick Cheney.

US officials do not know when the attacks might occur or what the targets might be, Mr Cheney said.

He also said the United States could not have anticipated that terrorists would turn four commercial airliners into missiles on September 11, as he responded to criticism the Bush administration ignored warning signs about those attacks.

US officials are this spring evaluating a growing body of intelligence suggesting another large scale a- Qaida attack may be in the planning for Europe, the Middle East or the United States, say government officials.

"I think that the prospects of a future attack on the US are almost a certainty," Mr Cheney told Fox News Sunday.

"It could happen tomorrow, it could happen next week, it could happen next year, but they will keep trying. And we have to be prepared."

Asked if Osama bin Laden's network was planning to strike American targets, Mr Cheney said: "We assume they are. There is certainly a level of noise out there in the system that would indicate that those efforts are continuing."

"There's a great temptation ... for people to look back at September 11 and say, 'Well, we haven't been hit in eight months, therefore the threats have ceded or gone away.' I don't think that's the case at all," Mr Cheney said.

Some of the intelligence suggests al Qaida may be agitating for a large-scale terrorist operation but there is no credible evidence on the method, date or location, and some potential threats have been discounted as not credible, U.S. officials said.

Mr Cheney said the US government is doing everything in its power "to make us a tougher target."

Scientist blames failure of monsoon on US warplanes

A scientist claims the war in Afghanistan is partly to blame for the failure of the monsoon in parts of India.

The chief scientific officer at the Centre for Atmospheric Sciences in New Delhi says large volumes of greenhouse gases have been released by US warplanes.

Murari Lal believes the war has contributed significantly to the global warming factors he says are behind the low rainfall.

He told the Press Trust of India: "The injection of large amount of greenhouse gases and aerosols over Afghanistan, Pakistan and Arabian Sea by US fighter planes during the Afghanistan war in the upper troposphere and lower stratosphere contributed to significantly deficient rainfall over north-west and central India."

Al-Qaida waiting for 'the right moment to strike'

The US military is warning the al-Qaida network remains capable of carrying out terrorist acts.

They say they have scored significant victories against al-Qaida but that the global terrorist organization is far from being wiped out.

Navy Commander Frank Merriman admits pockets of enemy fighters are believed to be hiding in Afghanistan and Pakistan, waiting for the right moment to strike.

"Central Command would never say al-Qaida and the Taliban have lost their effectiveness," Merriman said.

"They are a worldwide organization. There very well may be other terrorist acts in the planning process, and our goal is to try to disturb and eliminate as many of those as we can."

US military officials have dismissed claims that many al-Qaida fighters managed to escape during Operation Anaconda, the biggest ground offensive in the five-month war that ended this month.

However, Taliban leaders and others familiar with the Islamic movement say as many as 1,000 Taliban and al-Qaida fighters who escaped from Afghanistan are hiding in lawless regions of Pakistan and are planning a comeback in Afghanistan.

Others are believed to be still inside Afghanistan.

US military and intelligence officials say al-Qaida and Taliban fighters in Pakistan's North West Frontier Province, near the Afghan border, are expected to step up activity in the spring as weather improves.

More terrorist attacks on US likely, says Defence Secretary

More terrorist attacks on the US are likely, says Defence Secretary Donald Rumsfeld.

He says the country needs to be prepared even though the government is better prepared in light of the September 11 suicide hijackings.

He says it is just not possible to defend every place in the US that terrorists might strike.

"I think we have to be realistic. The likelihood is - because it's not possible to defend at every place at every moment - that there will be another terrorist attack," he said.

"We should just face that reality," he said in an interview with radio reporters.

Rumsfeld went on to say he is not aware of a White House plan for attacking Osama bin Laden's al Qaida terrorist network in Afghanistan prior to September 11.

A senior US official says an options memo on actions to dismantle al Qaida was prepared by George W Bush's foreign policy team as threats of terrorism peaked last summer. It was dated September 10.

"I don't have knowledge of it," Rumsfeld said. He said mid-level officials at the National Security Council may have discussed asking the Pentagon to put together a battle plan, "but I don't recall anything at my level".

Al-Qaida threatens more attacks on Americans

Al-Qaida has threatened more attacks on Americans and dismissed the US campaign to dismantle the terrorist group.

A spokesman for the terror organisation is branding the war on terrorism a "Hollywood script" without effect.

Sulaiman Abu Ghaith made the statement in Algerian newspaper El Youm.

"Al-Qaida still maintains its military, security, economic and informational structures," he said

"Al-Qaida will organise more attacks inside American territory and outside, at the moment we choose, at the place we choose and with the objectives that we want," Abu Ghaith said.

The interview by the al-Qaida spokesman followed one posted on the Internet on June 2 in which Abu Ghaith threatened attacks on Americans and Jews, targeting "both people and buildings."

The editor in chief of El Youm said the interview it published was carried out on Sunday via two intermediaries.

Editor H'Mida Ayachi said that El Youm formulated the questions that were faxed to an intermediary. A second intermediary actually asked the questions. He would not say where the interview took place.

Abu Ghaith said that al-Qaida "functions according to a rigorous, secret logic" and that it cannot be knocked out.

"The American campaign is but a Hollywood script with its victims thousands of innocent villagers killed without having been implicated in the battle."

'Holy war' urge of new Bin Laden video

Osama bin Laden has urged Muslims to join his holy war in new video footage found in Afghanistan.

The tape was found by a Kabul resident in a house previously used by pro-Taliban or al-Qaida forces.

It's not known when it was filmed.

The footage lasts more than an hour but there is no specific mention of the September 11 attacks.

Bin Laden is filmed telling an audience to reject modern life and choose holy war. Battle, he says, is the best way to heaven.

Sky reports the video shows Bin Laden weave together religious stories, political rhetoric and a stern view of the secular world.

He speaks quietly, occasionally raising his voice or wagging a long finger to make a point during a rambling, repetitive talk.

Bin Laden briefly mentions the suffering of Muslims in Bosnia, Chechnya and the Palestinian territories and the presence of American troops in Saudi Arabia, particularly women soldiers.

He dismisses those who warn it is impossible to defeat America, recalling fighters in Afghanistan drove out a Soviet army far stronger than they were.

Bin Laden appears healthy but, as in a videotape aired on the Arab channel Al-Jazeera in December, his left arm is kept immobile at his side.

Three held over 'warships terror plot'

Three suspected suicide bombers have been arrested by police trying to dismantle a terrorist cell with links to al-Qaida.

They claim the 3 Saudi nationals were planning suicide operations against British and American warships patrolling the Strait of Gilbraltar.

The names of the suspects - who were arrested in Morocco - have not been released.

The arrests were made with the help of intelligence services of several countries.

It is the first such terrorist crackdown in Morocco since the US launched its war on terrorism.

Meanwhile, it is claimed there are indications that an April 11 terrorist attack against a synagogue in Tunisia, which killed 19 people, may also be linked to al-Qaida.

If al-Qaida operatives are confirmed to be behind the attack, it would mark the group's first known successful operation outside of the war zone in Central Asia since September 11.

Bin Laden tape warns of more attacks

Osama bin Laden says the "youths of God" are planning more attacks against the US until Washington stops its aggression against Muslims.

The warning comes in an audiotape broadcast by Qatar-based television station al-Jazeera.

It is not clear when the tape was made. The short message was broadcast with a picture of bin Laden in the background.

Bin laden states: "By God, the youths of God are preparing for you things that would fill your hearts with terror and target your economic lifeline until you stop your oppression and aggression".

His message is addressed to the American people, who he urges to "understand the message of the New York and Washington attacks which came in response to some of your previous crimes.

He adds: "But those who follow the activities of the band of criminals in the White House, the Jewish agents, who are preparing for an attack on the Muslim world... Feel that you have not understood anything from the message of the two attacks."

Al-Jazeera has become known for its broadcast of audio and videotapes of al-Qaida leaders.

Last month, it aired excerpts from a videotape in which a voice said to be bin Laden's is heard naming the leaders of the 19 September 11 hijackers.

Until then, bin Laden had not been heard from since shortly after the US-led bombing campaign began in Afghanistan last October.

The latest interview which al-Jazeera said one of its correspondents conducted in June with two top al-Qaida fugitives was aired to correspond with the first anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

Bush 'was warned of possible bin Laden plot to hijack planes'

President George W Bush was told by US intelligence before the September 11 attacks that Osama bin Laden's terrorist network might hijack American aeroplanes, the White House has admitted.

But officials said the president and his advisers had no way of knowing that suicide hijackers would use the planes as missiles.

The attack on the World Trade Centre (AP)

White House press secretary Ari Fleischer said the administration, acting on the scant information, notified the "appropriate agencies" last summer that hijackings were possible.

"There has been long-standing speculation, shared with the president, about the potential of hijackings in the traditional sense," Mr Fleischer said.

"I also indicated that we had general threats involving Osama bin Laden around the world and including in the United States."

The development, first reported by CBS television, comes as congressional investigators intensify their study of whether the government failed to adequately respond to warnings of a suicide hijackings before September 11.

It is the first link between Mr Bush and intelligence gathered before September 11 about the attacks.

Mr Fleischer would not discuss when or how the information was given to Mr Bush, but a senior administration official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the president was made aware of the potential for hijackings of US planes during one or more routine intelligence briefings last summer.

The CIA would not confirm what it told Mr Bush, but the agency said the issue of bin Laden's attempting an airline hijacking was among a number of terrorist methods raised to US government officials at the time.

But there was no information that suggested hijackers would crash planes into American landmarks and there was no mention of a date, a CIA official said.

'Bin Laden' statement hails terror attacks

A statement attributed to Osama bin Laden appeared on an Islamic website, praising an attack on US marines in Kuwait and an apparent terrorist attack on a French supertanker off Yemen.

The statement, signed "your brother, Osama bin Mohammed bin Laden" and dated October 12, did not clearly claim responsibility for the attacks.

But it said they coincided with the anniversary of the start of US attacks on Afghanistan.

The message stated the attacks were meant as a "clear and strong message to all enemies and friends alike that holy warriors, with God's help, haven't been weakened by what befell them."

There was no way to verify the authenticity of the statement on the Website, which has carried articles in the past attributed to senior al-Qaida operatives.

US officials have not verified bin Laden's whereabouts this year and say a previously aired video-tape of him having dinner with his associates in early November in Afghanistan was the last definitive sign he was alive.

"We congratulate our Islamic community on the bold, heroic holy war that was executed by its sons of the faithful holy warriors in Yemen against a crusader oil tanker and in Kuwait against the invading and occupying American troops," the Arabic statement read.

"By exploding the oil tanker in Yemen, the holy warriors hit the umbilical cord and lifeline of the crusader community, reminding the enemy of the heavy cost of blood and the gravity of losses they will pay as a price for their continued aggression on our community and looting of our wealth."

Bin Laden has often referred to Americans as "crusaders" and to Americans and Jews as "the enemy".

Such statements have appeared periodically on Islamic fundamentalist Websites that hide the identity of those who run them and espouse anti-Western ideology.

Ship carrying North Korean missiles found near Middle East

A ship carrying a dozen Scud-type missiles from North Korea has been intercepted in the Arabian Sea.

US officials say the missiles are believed to have been destined for Yemen.

The ship was stopped and boarded about 600 miles east of the Horn of Africa.

US intelligence had been tracking the vessel closely, said the officials.

The ship contained about a dozen short- to medium-range missiles, similar to the Scud missiles used by Iraq in the Gulf War. It also contained missile parts.

The ship was stopped and boarded by a patrol boat in the region which was not an American ship. A US team rushed to the scene to participate in the search.

The ship "had another flag, but it was a North Korea ship," the officials said.

The vessel was held in the area while the search continued. Officials said the shipment did not appear to be headed for Iraq.

Yemen has been identified by the United States as a nation that has harboured terrorists, although its government has been an ally of the United States in the war against global terrorism.

Yemen's port of Aden was the site of the October 2000 attack on the destroyer USS Cole by terrorists, which killed 17 sailors.

Bin Laden still a threat and planning attacks warns CIA chief

The war on terror has resulted in the arrests of nearly 1,000 al-Qaida suspects in more than 60 countries.

But Osama bin Laden's terrorist group remains the most immediate and serious threat facing America, Central Intelligence Agency director George Tenet told a Senate committee.

Terrorists have considered attacks in the US against high-profile government or private facilities, famous landmarks and airports, bridges, harbours and dams, Tenet said.

"I must repeat, al-Qaida has not yet been destroyed," Tenet said, despite the war in Afghanistan.

"We assess that al-Qaida and other terrorist groups will continue to plan to attack this country and its interests abroad."

Tenet said high-profile events such as the Olympics or last weekend's Super Bowl also fit the terrorists' interests in striking another blow.

Tenet also outlined what US forces operating inside Afghanistan since the fall of the Taliban have discovered about bin Laden's efforts to develop weapons of mass destruction.

"Documents recovered from al-Qaida facilities in Afghanistan show that bin Laden was pursuing a sophisticated biological weapons research programme," Tenet said.

The terrorist organisation also has shown an interest in chemical, nuclear and radiological weapons, he said.

Tenet also outlined the threats posed by nations seeking nuclear, chemical or biological weapons, including Iraq and Iran.

Bin Laden vows to die as martyr in attack this year

A British Islamic news agency says it has an audio recording of Osama bin Laden in which he predicts he will die as a martyr this year in an attack against his enemies.

The Al-Ansaar agency says the 53-minute tape was allegedly recorded this month and acquired from a seller who advertised over the internet.

Imran Khan, who runs the Birmingham-based agency, says he translated the tape, describing it as poetic with several verses from the Koran.

"In this final year I hurl myself and my steed with my soul at the enemy. Indeed on my demise I will become a martyr," the al-Qaida leader purportedly says.

"I pray my demise isn't on a coffin bearing green mantles. I wish my demise to be in the eagle's belly," he continues.

Mr Khan said experts contacted by Al-Ansaar believed the "eagle" referred to the United States and the quote revealed bin Laden's wish to end his life in a final act of terrorism.

In Washington, US counter-terrorism officials were reviewing a transcript of the tape, but said they could not verify it was an authentic message from the terror chief.

While the speaker mentions an apparent intention to die in the coming year and uses some rhetoric similar to bin Laden's, officials said they could not be certain of the speaker's identity without reviewing the actual recording.

Mr Khan said the agency, which has released previous bin Laden tapes, had used the same sources to check the validity of the new tape. His claims could not be independently verified.

If authentic, the tape would be the latest in a series by bin Laden since the September 11, 2001, attacks.

Bin Laden tape urges suicide attacks

Al-Jazeera television has broadcast an audio message purportedly from Osama bin Laden.

The tape urged Iraqis to carry out suicide attacks against Americans, saying that was what scared Israel and America most.

It also said the United States was waging a psychological war against Iraq, but added that Iraqis should expect a massive air bombardment.

"Don't worry about the American lies and their smart bombs and laser ones, they look for only the clear obvious targets," said the voice, which Al-Jazeera officials had earlier confirmed was Bin Laden's.

It urged the Iraqis to stay strong in case of a strike against them from the United States.

"The most effective means to devoid the aerial force of its content is by digging large numbers of trenches and camouflage them," he said, exhorting Iraqis to draw from al Qaida's experiences in fighting the Americans in Afghanistan.

"We stress the importance of suicide bombings against the enemy, these attacks that have scared Americans and Israelis like never before."

Bin Laden in nuclear bid

A leading Pakistani nuclear scientist says Osama bin Laden asked him for help in making a nuclear weapon before the September 11 attacks.

Sultan Bashiruddin Mahmood's son, Azim, says his father is barred by his government from talking to reporters.

Dr Azim says his father met bin Laden in 2000 and as late as July 2001.

He said: "Basically, Osama asked my father, 'How can a nuclear bomb be made and can you help us make one?'

"My father said, 'No, and secondly you must understand it is not child's play for you to build a nuclear bomb."'

It's not known whether bin Laden has taken even the first steps.

There has been previous evidence of al-Qaida's interest in nuclear weapons.

Computers found at various facilities in Afghanistan indicate that the terror network has sought to obtain and develop nuclear and other potent weapons.
