lapse
at

airports;
1,000
uniforms
missing

TORONTO
More
than
1,000
Canadian
airport
security
uniforms
and
badges
disappeared
in
the
first
nine
months
of
the
year,
prompting
a
legislator
to
warn
Monday
that
"that
security
can
now
be
breached
at
a
major
airport."
Some
of
the
items
were
discovered
on
the
online
auction
site
eBay,
the
CBC
News
said.
Canada
is
spending
$6.2
billion
over
five
years
to
improve
border
security
following
the
Sept.
11,
2001,
terror
attacks
against
Washington
and
New
York.
The
measures
include
improved
screening
at
the
89
airports
operated
by
the
federal
government.
Critics
say
little
has
improved
and
cited
the
security
lapse.
"The
real
fear
should
be
that
security
can
now
be
breached
at
a
major
airport.
That
an
airplane
could
be
boarded,
that
baggage
could
be
tampered
with,"
said
Conservative
legislator
Peter
MacKay.
Transport
Minister
Jean
Lapierre
ordered
an
investigation
into
how
the
uniforms
and
badges
disappeared
and
an
immediate
check
of
the
ID
of
all
airport
workers.
A
special
security
pass
is
required
to
have
access
to
restricted
areas
in
an
airport.
