The official witnesses to Saddam Hussein's impending execution gathered Friday in Baghdad's fortified Green Zone in final preparation for his hanging, as state television broadcast footage of his regime's atrocities. The Iraqi government readied all the necessary documents, including a "red card" — an execution order introduced during Saddam's dictatorship. As the hour of his death approached, Saddam received two of his half brothers in his cell on Thursday and was said to have given them his personal belongings and a copy of his will.

Najeeb al-Nueimi, a member of Saddam's legal team in Doha, Qatar, said he too requested a final meeting with the deposed Iraqi leader. "His daughter in Amman was crying, she said 'Take me with you,'" al-Nueimi said late Friday. But he said their request was rejected. An adviser to Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said Saddam would be executed before 6 a.m. Saturday, or 10 p.m. Friday EST. The time was agreed upon during a meeting between U.S. and Iraqi officials, said the adviser, who declined to be named because he is not authorized to speak to the media.

"The time has been agreed upon. It will be done by six o'clock in the morning," the adviser said. "The agreement was reached during a meeting between Iraqi and American officials. Saddam will be handed over shortly before the execution."

"I have no illusions that my message will achieve any change, but I thought that here I had a chance that Osama bin Laden would listen and maybe, just maybe, my message would touch his conscience," he said in explanation of his choice of recipient. Ramos-Horta's message was broadcast at the weekend.

"On this occasion when we are celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ, my words, words of peace, are sent to my brother somewhere in the mountains, in the caves, of Afghanistan and Pakistan, Osama bin Laden. Yes, I consider you to be a brother," he said.

Ramos-Horta said he failed to understand why bin Laden directed his resentment over the harm done to Muslims against innocent civilians. "I come from a small country, East Timor, that was invaded by the largest Muslim country in the world. "I lost brothers and sisters, yet I do not hate one single Muslim, I do not hate one single Indonesian. That's the only difference between you and me, my brother Osama bin Laden," he said.

"I beg you to re-think and extend your love, your solidarity, your friendship, the same ones you feel about Palestinians, extend to the rest of the world, extend to Europeans, to Christians. You will then win them over that way, more than through hatred and violence. I thank you, may God Almighty and Merciful bless us all." The Nobel Peace laureate said he hoped his words got through.

"I can only hope and pray that Osama bin Laden heard my message and accepted it in a spirit of peace," he said.

KHOST: Afghan authorities on Tuesday said that they had arrested a Pakistani national who had allegedly been providing suicide bombers to the Taliban in eastern Paktika province. The man, whose name was not revealed, was “in charge of recruiting suicide bombers and equipping them,” provincial governor Mohammad Akram Khpolwak said. He was arrested from Bermal district in the bordering Paktika province on Monday, the governor said. He gave no further details saying that the case was under investigation. The governor also said that police raided a suspected Taliban compound in the same district and seized a bomb-fitted motorbike. However the owner of the motorcycle fled before the raid, he added. ASTRAKHAN, Russia (UPI) -- Russia's Federal Security Service announced Tuesday the arrest of six Muslim extremists who allegedly planned a New Year's Eve terror attack in Astrakhan.
FSB agents raided the men's homes and reportedly recovered a homemade bomb, a sawn off hunting rifle and ammunition, a hand grenade, printed material, extremist tapes and CDs, a source told the Interfax news agency. The source said police had been tipped off that the men had been raising funds and reading material inciting religious hatred. An FSB statement said it was the first case of religiously motivated terror planning in the region, which is where the Volga River empties into the Caspian Sea.
Details of the alleged planned attack were not disclosed.

An attack on French soil is likely to happen in the next few weeks or months, according to a senior French foreign intelligence official, who said today that they are on the highest state of alert since 9/11. This comes amidst news reports of a terrorist plot during the holiday season to strike the Channel tunnel, or Chunnel, that runs between London and Paris.

While a French foreign intelligence service official notes that they are not aware of any specific plots or targets, the foreign intelligence service is on high alert due to an increasing amount of chatter and information that is emanating from Pakistan and Afghanistan. According to news reports, the Chunnel plot is being put together and run out of Pakistan.

While he didn't have any indications that such an attack is imminent, ABC News was told by a French foreign intelligence official today that indeed Pakistan and Afghanistan are re-emerging as al Qaeda's main training ground and that there is increasing "chatter" and intelligence coming out of those areas.

The official said "dozens" of Westerners have been trained in North Waziristan and Afghanistan in the past eight months alone and that some have already returned to the West. Most of them were British citizens, said the official, but he added there were some Americans and even a few Frenchmen who, he said, are still being trained.

Based on these pieces of intelligence as well as information shared by the CIA, the French foreign intelligence service thinks that an attack on French soil will be coming in the next few weeks or months. However, this worry is not shared by any other anti-terrorism police units, which report that "everything is quiet." British authorities believed that everything was quiet, however, before the July 7, 2005 attack in London. In fact, the British had even lowered their alert level the week before.

The Chunnel has been a target for terrorists since before 9/11. The French conducted an "extensive security review" of Eurotunnel in September, which included sending covert operatives for "test runs" and posting undercover "Train Marshals" for several weeks. A TALIBAN warlord and close ally of Osama bin Laden has been killed by an American airstrike. Army chief Mullah Akhtar Mohammad Osmani was hit as he traveled in a car with two other men in Afghanistan's Helm and province. He was killed on Tuesday near the Pakistani border but the US military only announced his death yesterday after confirming the kill. He is the most senior Taliban leader to be killed since the US and British led coalition invaded Afghanistan in 2001. US military spokesman Col Tom Collins described Osmani's death as a "big loss" for the radical Islamic militia.

(Reuters) Al Qaeda will continue to target the United States and other Western countries so long as Muslims are under attack, the militant group's second-in-command Ayman al-Zawahri said in a video tape aired on Wednesday. "If we are attacked in our land we shall not stop attacking you in your countries, God willing," Zawahri said in the tape aired by Al Jazeera television.

"The formula for your safety is: You will not dream of security until we live it as a reality in Palestine and all Muslim countries," he said. Al Qaeda, which carried out the September 11, 2001 attacks on U.S. cities, has repeatedly vowed more strikes on the United States. Zawahri last threatened attacks in a videotape in June to avenge the killing of the leader of al Qaeda in Iraq. In the latest tape, Zawahri dismissed U.S. President George W. Bush's argument that combating terrorism can guarantee security and said Washington was scrambling for an exit from Iraq and Afghanistan, but was approaching the wrong parties.

"Both Democrats and Republicans are scrambling to find an exit from the disasters in Afghanistan and Iraq and are still thinking with the same rash mentality and trying to negotiate with some sides to secure your exit but these sides cannot offer you an escape and your attempts will only bring more failure. JERUSALEM: Al Qaeda has recently boosted its presence in Lebanon and could attack foreign peacekeepers who have been stationed there since Israel’s war with Hezbollah guerrillas, a top Israeli intelligence analyst said on Sunday.

An Israeli official quoted Brigadier Yossi Baidatz, chief of research in Military Intelligence, as telling Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s cabinet that Osama bin Laden’s militant network was recruiting mainly in Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon.

“There are major signs of a Global Jihad (Al Qaeda) presence in Lebanon, especially the refugee camps, and one of their intentions is to attack the foreign peacekeepers,” the official quoted Baidatz as saying in the briefing. “They see the peacekeepers as symbols of the West,” he said. The United Nations beefed up its peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon, UNIFIL, as part of an Aug 14 truce ending a war that buoyed Hezbollah’s regional status as a force capable of taking on the Jewish state.

Lebanese and Western analysts have long identified some sympathy for Al Qaeda among Lebanon’s disaffected Sunni Muslims, while pointing out that any spread of popularity would likely be off-set by the large number of Shia in the country.

COTABATO CITY -- The Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) said on Sunday that al-Qaeda-affiliated militants had plotted to disrupt the 12th Summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Cebu.
