One torso was spotted on the main road to Salimaniyah and the second in the Askari district, the sources told AFP. ‘We don’t know if they are Kurds, Turkmen or Arabs,’ he said, adding that ‘the inquiry will be difficult.’ Turkmen, Kurds and Arabs populate the city of Kirkuk, 255 kilometres (160 miles) north of Baghdad, which has been the scene of numerous clashes since the fall of Saddam Hussein during last year’s US-led invasion.

A series of loud explosions rocked Baghdad late Friday, an AFP correspondent reported. The blasts come amid warnings by US military officials of greater violence ahead of the June 30 transfer of power in Iraq. Around 90 people were killed in a rebel offensive on four cities across Iraq on Thursday. The US-led coalition’s task in Iraq will become harder if the new Iraq administration imposes martial law after it takes over on June 30, US Secretary of State Colin Powell was quoted on Friday as saying.

Powell said he was pleased that Iraqi officials had said there were no concrete plans for martial law. ‘It would make our task in Iraq more complex, because implementing martial law is more a policing problem than a military one,’ Powell was quoted as saying in the interview published in Germany’s Die Welt newspaper. A drastic deterioration in the security situation in Iraq could result in the implementation of emergency laws or martial rule, however undesirable such measures may be in a democratic society, Iraq’s new interim vice-president said.

‘Announcing emergency laws or martial law depends on the nature of the situation. In normal situations, there is clearly no need for that,’ Ibrahim Al-Jaafari, a Shi’ite and member of the Islamic Dawa Party, told The Associated Press in an interview late on Thursday. ‘But in cases of excess challenges, emergency laws have their place,’ he said, adding that any such laws would fall within a ‘democratic framework that respects the rights of Iraqis.’

Vows
Iraq’s prime minister vowed to crush Baathist die-hards and foreign militants he blamed for killing more than 100 people in a day of suicide bombings and attacks meant to sabotage next week’s move toward Iraqi rule. Hours after Iyad Allawi spoke, militants were in action again overnight, killing three Iraqi policemen in an attack with rocket-propelled grenades on a police station near the town of Baquba.

‘These are isolated incidents,’ said Allawi. ‘We are going to defeat them.ة We have been expecting this escalation and we are expecting more escalation in the days ahead.’ The death toll from Thursday’s massive wave of bomb and gun attacks crept to more than 100 on Friday. Iraq’s third largest city Mosul was worst hit, with four suicide bombings killing 62 people, including a US soldier, and wounding 220, a senior military official said.

He said the attacks showed signs of loose coordination between groups intent on destabilizing Iraq and warned of more bloodshed before and after the June 30 handover, when US-led occupation formally ends and Allawi’s government takes over.

Air strike
US-led forces said they killed between 20 and 25 people in an air strike Friday on a suspected safehouse of alleged al-Qaeda operative Abu Mussab al-Zarqawi in the hotspot Iraqi town of Fallujah. Witnesses said they saw a US plane fire two missiles on the residential Shuhada district in the south of the city, 50 kilometres (30 miles) west of Baghdad, but the local hospital said it had only received two injured people.

‘Today, coalition forces conducted another strike on a known Zarqawi network safe house in southeastern Fallujah, based on multiple confirmations of Iraqi and coalition intelligence,’ the coalition’s deputy director of operations, Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt, said in a statement. ‘This operation employed precision weapons to target and destroy the safe house,’ he added. A senior military official said between 20 and 25 people were killed in the attack, which was along the same lines as two other airborne missile strikes on suspected Zarkawi hideouts in Fallujah over the past week.

The total death toll from the three raids is 59 to 64 people, the US military said, warning that it would not shrink from carrying out further such strikes. At least 66 people were reported killed as US forces reacted to an intensifying and apparently coordinated wave of attacks on four Iraqi cities, Thursday less than a week before the June 30 transfer of power to a transitional government. US marines said a Cobra helicopter was shot down in a second day of clashes near Fallujah, 50 kilometers (30 miles) west of the capital, Baghdad, where the US army said it killed 20 foreign fighters on Wednesday.

The bloodiest clashes on Thursday were in Baquba, 60 kilometres north of Baghdad, where the US army said it lost two servicemen in fighting with suspected supporters of Abu Mussab Al-Zarqawi, a fugitive leader of the al-Qaeda terror network who has declared war on the interim government. The army said it dropped four 500-pound (220 kilogramme) bombs in what its spokesman, Brigadier General Mark Kimmitt, described as a ‘precision’ strike on three houses in Baquba.

Local hospital sources said that 17 Iraqis, including 11 police, were killed and 26 were wounded in the fighting. The US military, which had previously forecast mounting attacks on the interim government led by Iyad Allawi, said Zarqawi’s supporters launched simultaneous attacks Thursday on local government headquarters, a police station and the house of the provincial police chief in Baquba.

Another seven Iraqis and a US soldier were killed in a series of car bomb attacks on five police stations in the northern city of Mosul. Police captain Wadi Mohammed Abdullah said US army helicopters fired on insurgents armed with rocket-propelled grenades and Kalashnikovs. A US military statement later said coalition-backed Iraqi security forces had regained control of a police station that had been taken over by insurgents.

Four members of the Iraqi National Guard were killed and three wounded when a man disguised as a police officer blew himself up Thursday outside a control post southwest of Baghdad, an official from the paramilitary force said. Another would-be suicide bomber was shot dead by a policeman in Ramadi, 120 kilometres west of here, before he could plant a suitcase bomb in front of a police station, a witness said.

‘This morning we started seeing simultaneous attacks in different cities,’ a senior US-led coalition military official told reporters here on condition of anonymity. ‘We have said for a long period of time that we speculate there is a loose coordination going on here ... We suspect that these were coordinated attacks, simultaneous attacks,’ he noted.

Ceasefire
The militia of Shiite cleric Muqtada Al-Sadr has declared a unilateral ceasefire with US forces in the Baghdad district of Sadr City and has offered to help police ensure safety in the area, a statement said Friday. A statement issued by the central committee of Al-Sadr’s Al-Mahdi Army and distributed in the Shiite district, said the ceasefire went into effect Thursday was ‘obligatory on all Al-Mahdi army’s heroes.

The declaration said the cease-fire was called to show Al-Sadr’s interest in preventing ‘terrorists and saboteurs’ from ‘causing overwhelming chaos or security disorder.’ Police arrested three men Friday for shooting at the local offices of the two main Kurdish parties. Gunmen opened fire on the offices of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan and the Kurdish Democratic Party in Tuz Khurmatu, about 60 kilometers (45 miles) south of Kirkuk, said Gen Anwar Amin of the Iraqi Civil Defense Corps. The attacks occurred early Friday. The gunmen were seen later in a vehicle used in the attack. A fourth suspect escaped. Officials did not disclose the ethnicity of the men.

Ethnic tensions in the northern part of the country have flared between Kurds, Arabs and Turkomen, stemming form attacks on leaders in the various groups. A representative of Iraq’s top Shiite cleric Friday denounced the terror attacks which killed about 90 people in Iraq, and slammed al-Qaeda’s top leaders as ‘filthy infidels.’ The spokesman for Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani also announced the assassination of prominent cleric Sheikh Hussein al-Harithi in Baghdad on Thursday, saying the murder was a sign of rising attacks against Shiites.

BEIRUT: Investigators have identified remains found in Iraq as missing Lebanese Hussein Othman, a translator working with a media team that came under fire near Basra last year, British television company ITN said on Friday. Othman and French cameraman Fred Nerac went missing after their vehicle was caught in crossfire between American and Iraqi forces on March 22 while covering the US-led invasion of Iraq for ITN.

Veteran journalist Terry Lloyd, travelling in a second vehicle, was killed in the attack. In a statement released on Friday, ITN said the results of tests carried out by British military investigators on the remains that were found near the scene of the gunbattle matched Othman’s family’s DNA.
